TOMMY ROMAN

Inducted on September 22, 1974

Thomas John Romano, was born in. Bayonne, New Jersey, on January 5,1919. At the age of 16, as an amateur, Tommy won the Hudson County .Featherweight Championship. Entering the pro ranks in 1936, Tommy met the best in the welterweight division. In a ten year: career, Tommy engaged in 116 bouts, against fighters as Mike Piskin, Joey Haddad, Mickey Makar, Freddie Archer, Danny Martin: and a winning decision over Fritzie Zivic, welterweight title holder.

Tommy “Hooks” Roman was known as a slugger. He was a keen student of the game and was always maneuvering cleverly while going about his rushing, slam-banging, two fisted milling.

Others that he met were Mickey Farber, Jonnie Rinaldi, Little Jack Sharkey, Georgie Levy, Johnny Morro, Pee Wee Bonito and Frankie Conn. These bouts were prior to his entering the Air Force.

During World War II, Tommy boxed, promoted, and refereed boxing shows for servicemen, while stationed with the U .Army at Barksdale Field, Louisiana.

Retiring from the ring in 1945, Tommy has been employed as a warehouseman and in the construction trade. Married to the former Nola Frances Barber, the Roman’s have three sons, Terrance, Thomas Jr., and Nicholas, and a daughter Lorraine.
