CHARLES 'PETEY' SMITH

CHARLEY SMITH aka “PETEY” SMITH

Born in Morristown, NJ, Charley Smith moved to Newark when he graduated from South Side
High School. Jimmy Jones, together with Angelo Pucci, instructed him in the art of
fisticuffs. During his boxing career, as a lightweight, he dropped a hotly contested
10 round battle to Ike Williams, holder of the NBA lightweight title.

At the Arena Gardens in Detroit, at age 19, Charley Smith scored a technical knockout
over Chester Rico, whom “RING MAGAZINE” had rated the sixth best lightweight in the
world. Smith’s TKO over Rico was no surprise, since he scored 32 KO’s in 52 of his
pro contests.
